What We Are Doing In BAS

Business Services

  • The Overstock Den is hosting a community e-waste recycling event in October.
  • The Overstock Den is actively collaborating with Capital Projects to look at ways to improve reuse/recycle rates of items in a building before it is demolished.
  • Strategic Sourcing has finalized new carpet agreements that include reclamation of old carpets for remanufacturing, avoiding the carpets ending up in our land fills. The new vendors will be meeting with large campus customers to review the sustainability aspects of their products and processes.

Document Services

  • Will continue to meet established goal of using 30% recycled content paper; evaluating using 100% recycled content paper
  • Currently using soy-based ink in the press rooms
  • Is partnering with Recycling Department to implement a shredding service for the campus
  • Is investigating the feasibility of purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle this year to replace a 12-year old van used by Mail Services
  • Continues to provide a successful toner cartridge recycling program

OMBO (Office of Marketing & Business Outreach)

  • Assisted in the promotion of the Alternative Transportation Fair, held in April 2007.
  • Arranged for public service announcements on the Bay Bridge LED about using alternative transportation
  • Supported EH&S's Strawberry Creek Clean-up event by negotiating a sponsor agreement (Teva, which produces a line of footwear using 20-30% post consumer recycled materials) and promoting the event
  • Identified a sign company that uses non-toxic inks to produce transit advertising signs

Parking & Transportation

  •  P&T provided information tabling for new students at Calapalooza
  • Development of an enhanced on-line carpool ride-matching system in partnership with 511.org- project on-hold until new P&T web site is launched
  • Vendors are being researched to provide bus notification technology installation on campus shuttles and shelters in this fiscal year
  • VC funding of high priority bicycle plan projects secured and projects are underway
  • P&T participation and membership on the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability

Rec Sports

Grant funding from PG&E has been approved. Rec Sports is waiting for PP-CS lead to release the funds and move forward upgrading the lighting fixtures in the Rec Sports Facility.
