Lean is a set of pricinciples focused on increasing value-added work by eliminating waste and reducing incidental work. Lean is derived from the Toyota Production System and if implemented successfully has the outcome of improving profitability, customer satisfaction, throughput time, and employee morale. Lean concepts were originally developed to apply in a manufacturing environment, but are now being more widely adopted in other environments such as office and healthcare environments.
The poster above was developed through a collborative effort within BAS to illustrate one of the key tenets of Lean which is the 8 Wastes. The poster and related icons are used to visually higlight waste in the workplace.
Employees in several BAS units (Business Services, Library Bindery, UC Printing Services, Recreational Sports and ASUC Auxiliary) are in the process of learning Lean concepts in theory and in application. All staff, in each of these units, are training on lean concepts and completing 5-S and 8-Waste projects. This page will be updated with progress on the implementation of Lean in BAS, so check back often for new information!
